Oxy-acetylene Welding Torches
An oxy-acetylene welder or gas welder is an apparatus which mixes a jet of burning acetylene with oxygen. This produces an incredibly hot and focused flame. Gas welding torches are extremely versatile, they can be used for anything from welding, cutting, bending metal, tempering and more.
In a high-pressure oxy welder torch both the oxygen tanks and the acetylene tanks are pressurized. These torches can produce a flame of over 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. In a low pressure system the gas is made with an acetylene generator.
When used for cutting, a separate jet of oxygen is provided to oxidize or burn the metal away from the area which needs to be cut. The oxide which forms from the burning metal is blown away with bursts of oxygen.
When using an oxy-acetylene welding torch you should theoretically adjust the gases so there is no excess of either gas. In practice, normally people use a little more acetylene, quickly producing a hot flame with an inner white cone over 4,400 degrees Fahrenheit. More than enough to quickly melt the metals to be welded, and join them in a strong and reliable weld.
