Welding Helmets

By choosing the correct welding helmet, you will protect your eyes from the dangerous ultraviolet and infrared light that is emitted from a welding arc. This light can cause eye fatigue, or even worse, permanent damage to your eyes. There are basically two different kinds of welding helmets, once you know the difference between them it will be easy for you to make an educated decision of which one is best for you. A passive helmet uses a piece of tinted glass to block the arc, while an auto-darkening welding helmet uses sophisticated electronic circuitry which automatically darkens the lens.

When researching welding helmets you will notice they are designated with a code, such as #10 or a range of numbers, like #3-13. This number refers to how much light the helmet filters out, with higher numbers representing darker lenses.

When welding with a passive helmet, you lift up the front and lock it into the upright position, then position the electrode. Right before striking the arc, you have to either reach up and lower the helmet, or tip your head, causing it to drop. This can lead to accidental arc flashes, because it requires precise timing to properly execute. The fact that you cannot see your work when striking the arc can also result in poor weld starts, meaning more grinding work or weaker welds. When doing large projects with a lot of tack welds, your neck can get very tired from constantly raising and lowering your helmet.

An auto-darkening welding helmet is not raised like a passive one. Instead, the helmet has a base tint, normally #3 or #4, that is clear enough to see fairly well through. When the arc is struck, the helmet automatically switches to a darker shade. Using 2-4 sensors, it is possible to actually darken the lenses in under 1/20,000 of a second.
